Switch between Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze for navigation

Pick which mapping app Upper hands off to for turn-by-turn directions. Choose Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, and more from your Default Navigation Map setting.

Upper hands off each stop to a separate mapping app for turn-by-turn directions. You choose which app it uses — Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze — by setting your Default Navigation Map. Set it once, and every time you start navigation, Upper opens your chosen app with the stop address loaded.

Why this matters

Drivers stick with the mapping app they already trust. Setting Upper to your preferred app once means every navigation handoff feels familiar, so you spend less time fighting an unfamiliar interface mid-route.

Before you start

  • The mapping app you want to use is installed and signed in on your phone.
  • You have permission to change navigation settings. This is controlled by your admin, who can also set your default from the web app.

Supported navigation apps

You can choose from the following options in your Default Navigation Map setting:

  • Google Maps
  • Apple Maps
  • Waze
  • Map's.Me
  • Yandex
  • Sygic
  • In App Navigation (Upper's own built-in navigation)

"In App Navigation" keeps navigation inside Upper instead of handing off to another app. The other options open the external mapping app you choose. In App Navigation is an optional add-on, so it appears in the list only when your admin has added it to your workspace.

Change your navigation app

Open Settings in the Upper driver app

Open the Upper driver app and go to Settings.

Open your navigation preference

Go to General > User Settings > Default Navigation Map.

Select your preferred app

Choose the app you want Upper to use, then save the change.

The next time you start navigation to a stop, Upper opens the app you selected with the stop address loaded.

Your admin sets a default navigation app for your driver profile from the web app. You can change it on your phone unless the admin has locked the setting. If the option is missing or you can't edit it, contact your dispatcher — they can update the preference from your profile in the web app.

Some workspaces label drivers as Technicians. If your app uses Technician/Service wording, the navigation setting works the same way.
