Upper Help
Mobile Driver App

Features available in Android Auto mode

On Android Auto, Upper hands off turn-by-turn directions to Google Maps or Waze. Stop management and proof of delivery stay in the Upper app on your phone.

When you drive a route with Android Auto, Upper hands the directions to your navigation app — Google Maps or Waze — and that app shows turn-by-turn guidance on the car's display. Everything you do at the stop, such as completing a delivery or capturing proof of delivery, stays in the Upper app on your phone.

Why the split matters

The car display keeps your directions in view while you drive, so you can leave your phone alone. When you arrive, you pick up the phone and use Upper for the doorstep actions. Eyes stay on the road during the drive and on the customer at the stop.

What you see on the car display

Through Android Auto, the car screen shows whatever your navigation app displays — not the Upper app itself. With Google Maps or Waze that includes:

  • Turn-by-turn directions to the current stop
  • The map view with your route
  • Voice-guided directions
  • The estimated arrival time

Upper does not run inside the Android Auto interface. Android Auto shows your navigation app (Google Maps or Waze). The Upper app stays on your phone screen for everything that isn't driving directions.

What you do in the Upper app on your phone

The Upper app on your phone is where you run the route:

  • View your stop list and stop details
  • Mark a stop as completed, skipped, or failed
  • Capture proof of delivery — photos, signature, and notes (when your workspace requires them)
  • Start navigation to the next stop
  • Message dispatch

Which proof-of-delivery details you're asked for — photo, signature, notes — depends on how your workspace is set up. If a stop asks for something you don't expect, that's an admin setting, not a fault with Android Auto.

Typical workflow

In the Upper app, tap to navigate to your stop. Your navigation app — Google Maps or Waze — opens and the directions appear on the car display.

Drive to the stop using the car display.

On arrival, pick up your phone and use Upper to complete the stop and capture any required proof of delivery.

Start navigation to the next stop. The car display updates with the new directions.

Troubleshooting

If your workspace uses Technician/Service labels, the steps are the same — only the wording on some buttons and on the proof-of-service prompts differs.
