Scan barcodes
Use barcodes in Upper to tie a code to each stop so drivers can confirm the right package on delivery. Enabled by your admin and printed on the route manifest.
Barcodes give each stop a code you can match against the package you're delivering, so the right item goes to the right address. Barcodes are turned on by your admin, who sets up the barcode fields in the web app — once enabled, each stop can carry its own code, and that code prints on the route manifest you take on the run.
Labels vary by workspace. If your workspace is set up for service work, you may see Technician, Proof of Service, and Service Options in place of Driver, Proof of Delivery, and Delivery Options. The barcode steps are the same.
How barcodes work in Upper
Barcodes are set up on the web side and travel with the route to your phone:
- Your admin enables barcodes in the web app under Settings > Customization > Barcode Fields. They can add fields for a stop's barcode and choose the code type — Barcode or QR code — and optionally have Upper auto-generate the value.
- Each stop can carry its barcode value, which is added when the stop is created or imported in the web app.
- The barcode prints on the route manifest so you have a physical reference for the codes on your run.
Because barcodes are an enabled feature, you will only see them if your admin has turned them on for your workspace. If you don't see a barcode on a stop or on your manifest, ask your dispatcher whether barcodes are set up on your account.
A barcode is most useful as a doorstep check: match the code on the package against the code for the stop before you hand it over. Catching a wrong package at the door is far cheaper than the "this isn't what I ordered" call hours later.
Before you start
Confirm barcodes are enabled
Barcodes are configured by your admin in the web app. If you don't see a barcode on your stops or manifest, ask your dispatcher to confirm the feature is set up for your workspace.
Grant camera permission to the Upper app
If your workspace uses the phone camera to read codes, the Upper app needs camera permission. See Allow location and camera permissions.
Keep the barcode readable
Make sure the code on the package is clean and unobstructed, and that you have enough light to read it clearly.
