Set up Android Auto with Upper

Set Google Maps or Waze as your navigation app in Upper, connect your Android phone to the car, then tap Navigate to see directions on the Android Auto screen.

When you tap Navigate on a stop, Upper hands the address to the navigation app you've chosen. Both Google Maps and Waze work with Android Auto, so set one of them as your navigation app in Upper, connect your phone to the car, and directions appear on the Android Auto display.

Android Auto is Android-only. On an iPhone, see Set up CarPlay with Upper instead.

This article uses the default driver and delivery labels. If your workspace is set up for technicians and service work, you'll see labels like Technician and Service instead — the steps are the same.

Before you start

  • An Android phone with Android Auto — Set Android Auto up on your phone first.
  • A car or head unit that supports Android Auto — Connected to your phone by USB cable or wirelessly, depending on your vehicle.
  • Google Maps or Waze installed — These are the two navigation apps that work with both Upper and Android Auto. Install whichever one you'll use from the Play Store.

Set Google Maps or Waze as your navigation app

Upper uses your Default Navigation Map setting to decide which app opens when you tap Navigate. Set it to Google or Waze so directions hand off to an app Android Auto supports. This is set per driver, and you can change it at any time.

Open your navigation settings in Upper

Go to Settings > General > User Settings.

Set your Default Navigation Map

Choose Google or Waze as your Default Navigation Map.

Upper also offers its own in-app navigation as an optional add-on your admin can enable. To use it on the car display, though, choose Google or Waze — those are the apps Android Auto supports. See Switch between navigation apps.

Connect and navigate

Connect your phone to the car

Plug your phone in with a cable, or connect wirelessly if your car supports wireless Android Auto. Confirm Android Auto is active on the dashboard display.

Start your route in Upper

Open Upper on your phone and start the route you're running.

Tap Navigate on the first stop

Your chosen app — Google Maps or Waze — opens with the stop's address loaded.

Follow the directions on the Android Auto display

Directions appear on the car screen. When you reach the stop, return to Upper to mark it complete, then tap Navigate on the next stop.

Android Auto stays focused on whichever app you opened last. To move to the next stop, switch back to Upper, complete the current stop, and tap Navigate on the next one — your navigation app picks up the new address.
