Upper Help
Mobile Driver App

Features available in CarPlay mode

In CarPlay mode, Upper hands navigation to your map app on the car display, while stop management and proof of delivery stay in the Upper app on your iPhone.

CarPlay gives you the navigation half of a route on your car's built-in display, so you can keep your eyes on the road while you drive. The other half — your stop list, marking each stop complete or skipped, and capturing proof of delivery — stays in the Upper app on your iPhone. This article explains which tasks happen where.

Your workspace may label drivers as technicians and use Proof of Service instead of Proof of Delivery. The features are the same; only the wording differs.

How the two screens split the work

When you start navigation to a stop, Upper hands the turn-by-turn directions to your chosen map app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze). That map app is what appears on the CarPlay display. Upper itself does not run as a separate CarPlay screen — you complete the work for each stop on your iPhone.

This split keeps driving and delivering separate: the car display is for getting to the next address, and your phone is for everything you do once you arrive.

On the car display (via CarPlay)

The car display shows whatever your selected map app provides for the active stop:

  • Turn-by-turn directions
  • The route on a map
  • Voice-guided directions
  • Estimated arrival time

The exact look and the voice guidance come from the map app you picked, not from Upper. Apple Maps also works with Siri on CarPlay.

On your iPhone (Upper app)

Everything you do at a stop stays in the Upper app on your phone:

  • View your stop list and stop details
  • Mark a stop complete or skip it
  • Capture proof of delivery — photos, signature, and notes (when your workspace requires them)
  • Start navigation to the next stop
  • Message dispatch

Pick the map app you trust before you drive. Apple Maps pairs cleanly with CarPlay and Siri, while Google Maps and Waze are popular for their traffic data. You set the default in the Upper app under Settings, and you can change it any time. See Switch between navigation apps.

A typical stop, start to finish

Start navigation in Upper

Open the stop in the Upper app and start navigation. Your map app opens and the directions appear on the car display.

Drive to the stop

Follow the turn-by-turn directions on the car display until you arrive.

Complete the stop on your iPhone

Once you arrive, pick up your iPhone and work the stop in the Upper app — mark it complete or skip it, and capture any required proof of delivery.

Move to the next stop

Start navigation to the next stop in Upper. The car display updates with the new directions.

Always handle stop tasks — completing, skipping, and proof of delivery — while you are parked, using your iPhone. The car display is for navigation only.
