Monitor driver location in real-time
Track drivers live in Upper with Live Tracking. See each driver's progress, ETA, average speed, percent complete, and the actual path they took, as routes run.
Live Tracking in Upper shows where your drivers are and how their routes are going while the day is underway. For each driver you can see stops done versus total, their ETA, average speed, and percent complete — and you can pull up the actual path a driver has driven. It turns the usual "where's my driver?" questions into something you can answer by looking at a screen.
This account's app may show Technician instead of Driver and Service instead of Delivery. The labels are configurable per workspace. This article uses the default driver/delivery wording.
Why this matters
The calls that eat up a dispatcher's day — where is the driver, are they running late, did they reach that stop yet — all have the same answer: open Live Tracking and look. Driver progress updates as work comes in from the mobile app, so you can give customers a real ETA instead of a guess, and spot a route that's falling behind before it becomes a complaint.
Before you start
- Permissions — You need a role with dashboard access, such as Admin or Dispatch Manager.
- Drivers on the road — Live Tracking reflects routes that have been dispatched and are being run in the Upper mobile app. A route moves through Draft → Ready for Dispatch → Dispatched → In Transit → Completed; progress shows once drivers are working their stops.
- Drivers using the mobile app — Location and progress come from the Upper Route Planner app for Technician on each driver's phone. A driver who hasn't opened the app or started their route won't report progress yet.
Where Live Tracking lives
Open Live Tracking from the left sidebar to see your drivers and their route progress.
What you can see for each driver
Live Tracking gives you a per-driver read on how the route is going:
- Stops done / total — how many stops the driver has completed against the full route.
- ETA — the estimated arrival, calculated using historical traffic data.
- Average speed — the driver's average speed so far.
- Percent complete — how far through the route the driver is.
- Show Actual Path — pulls up the route the driver has actually driven, not just the planned line.
The columns shown in Live Tracking can be customized, so you can include things like a photo, a signature, or a note from the driver. Adjust the columns to surface the details your team checks most during the day.
Common scenarios
- A customer calls asking where their delivery is — Open Live Tracking, find the driver running that route, and read off the ETA and how many stops are left.
- A route looks like it's running behind — Compare percent complete and stops done against the time of day. The actual path and average speed help you see whether the driver is held up or off course.
- You need proof a stop was completed — Live Tracking can surface notes, photos, and signatures captured at stops; completed work also lands in Tasks → Completed with timestamps.
