Deactivate or remove a driver
Deactivate a driver's license or delete their profile from the Users page in Upper. Learn which to choose, what each one changes, and how to handle active routes first.
When a driver leaves the team or no longer needs access, you have two options from the Users page in Upper: deactivate their license to suspend access while keeping the profile, or delete the profile entirely. Both are done from the row action menu next to the driver's name.
Your workspace may label drivers as Technicians and deliveries as Service, so some menu items read "Technician" instead of "Driver." The steps are the same either way. This guide uses the driver/delivery labels.
Deactivate versus delete
Pick the option that matches the situation:
| Option | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Inactive User (deactivate) | Sets the driver's License Status to Inactive, suspending access while the profile stays in place | A driver on leave, a seasonal pause, or a temporary suspension you expect to reverse |
| Delete User | Removes the driver profile from your workspace | A driver who has permanently left the team |
If there's any chance the driver will return, deactivate instead of delete. Deactivating keeps the profile and its settings so you can reactivate without rebuilding it.
Before you start
- Permissions — You need an admin-level role to deactivate or delete a driver.
- Check active routes first — If the driver has in-progress or scheduled routes, reassign or recall those routes before you deactivate or delete. See Related below for reassignment.
Deactivate a driver (Inactive User)
Open the Users page
In the left sidebar, go to Manage → Users.
Find the driver
Locate the driver in the table. You can use the search box at the top of the list.
Open the row action menu
Click the kebab (…) menu in the Action column at the end of the driver's row.
Select Inactive User
Choose Inactive User. The driver's License Status changes to Inactive and their access is suspended.
To bring the driver back later, open the same menu and reactivate them so their License Status returns to Active.
Delete a driver (Delete User)
Open the Users page
In the left sidebar, go to Manage → Users.
Find the driver
Locate the driver in the table.
Open the row action menu and select Delete User
Click the kebab (…) menu in the Action column, then choose Delete User.
Confirm
Confirm the deletion when prompted.
Deleting removes the driver's profile. Reassign or recall any active or scheduled routes for that driver first, or those routes will be left without an assigned driver.
End the driver's app session
Deactivating or deleting a driver controls their license and profile. If you also need to force the driver out of the Upper Route Planner app on their phone right away — for example after a lost device — use Logout From All Devices from the same row action menu, and reset their password if needed.
For an immediate security response (lost or stolen phone), log the driver out of all devices and reset their password before you deactivate or delete. That ends the live session and blocks re-login.
