Use service areas for driver assignment

Assign service areas to drivers in Upper so stops are automatically matched to the driver who covers each zone, with manual reassignment on the Review Route screen.

Upper lets you assign one or more service areas to each driver. Once a driver is linked to an area, stops are automatically matched to the driver whose allowed and restricted areas fit best, so each driver tends to run the same territory. You can always adjust the result by hand on the Review Route screen.

Your workspace may show Technician and Service labels instead of Driver and Delivery (for example, "Users/Technicians" or "Assign Area"). The labels differ, but the feature works the same way. This article uses the driver/delivery labels.

Before you start

  • Service areas need to exist before you can assign them. Draw your allowed and restricted zones first under Settings > Service Area.
  • The Service Area feature is available on higher plans. If you don't see it, you may need to upgrade.

New to service areas? Start with what a service area is and how to draw one, then come back here to assign them to your drivers.

Assign a service area to a driver

You assign areas from the Users page, one driver at a time.

Open the Users page

Go to the Users page from the main navigation. Each row lists a driver, with a Service Area column and an Assign Area link in the row's actions.

Click Assign Area for the driver

On the driver's row, click Assign Area. If the driver already has zones, the link shows a count, for example Assign Area (2).

Add the areas you want

The Assign Service Area dialog opens with a list of your service areas on the left and a map preview on the right. The list shows each area's Area Name and Area Type (Allowed or Restricted).

For each area you want this driver to cover, click Add in its row. To assign everything at once, use Add All. To clear a selection, click Remove on the row, or Remove All. A counter at the top shows how many areas are selected.

Use the Search box at the top of the list to find an area quickly when you have many zones.

Save

Click Save. The driver's assigned areas update, and the count next to Assign Area reflects the new total.

How assignment affects routing

When drivers have service areas assigned, Upper automatically assigns stops to drivers based on their allowed and restricted areas. You can manually reassign stops later on the Review Route screen, so the automatic match is a starting point, not a hard rule.

Allowed and restricted areas play different roles:

  • Allowed areas define where a driver works.
  • Restricted areas flag stops that fall inside a no-go zone rather than removing them, so you can spot and handle them before dispatch.

A driver can be assigned more than one area. Whether a single area can be shared across multiple drivers is not documented here — confirm in your workspace before relying on it.
