Set navigation preferences for drivers

Choose Upper's default navigation app and set driving preferences in User Settings — pick Google, Apple, Waze and more, plus highway/toll avoidance and road side.

Upper Route Planner hands off turn-by-turn navigation to the map app of your choice, or uses its own in-app navigation. From User Settings you pick the default map app a driver opens when they tap to navigate, and you set driving preferences such as which road types to avoid and which side of the road to approach a stop from.

Depending on how your workspace is set up, some labels may read Technician and Service instead of Driver and Delivery (for example, "Proof of Service"). The settings work the same either way.

Why this matters

Drivers each have a map app they trust. Setting a default keeps a driver on the same map every time they navigate, and the driving preferences let you tailor how routes are followed — avoiding highways or tolls, accounting for vehicle type, and choosing which side of the road to pull up on.

Set navigation preferences

Open Settings

From the left sidebar, go to Manage > Settings. (You can also reach it from the top-right profile menu under Account > Settings.)

Open User Settings

In the left sub-navigation, under GENERAL, select User Settings.

Choose the default navigation map

Find Default Navigation Map and select the map app to open when a driver navigates to a stop:

  • Google
  • Apple
  • Waze
  • Map's.Me
  • Yandex
  • Sygic
  • In App Navigation — Upper's own built-in navigation

Set driving preferences

Under Driving Preferences Avoid, choose what to avoid on the route:

  • Highways
  • None
  • Highways and Tolls

Set the vehicle type

Select your Vehicle Type (for example, Truck) from the dropdown.

Choose the road side

Set Curbside Service (Road Side) — the side of the road a driver should approach a stop from. The default is Any Side.

Save

Click Save at the bottom of the page.

SettingWhat it does
Default Navigation MapWhich map app opens when a driver navigates to a stop
Driving Preferences AvoidWhether to avoid highways, or highways and tolls (or none)
Vehicle TypeThe class of vehicle being driven
Curbside Service (Road Side)Which side of the road a driver approaches a stop from

Default Navigation Map sets the starting choice for a driver, but a driver can also change their own navigation app inside the Upper driver app. If you want every driver on the same map, set it here and let drivers know the default.
