Set user roles and permissions
Set roles in Upper Solo when adding a user or by editing their record. For drivers, use Driver App Config to control what they can see and do in the mobile app.
Upper Solo has three fixed roles — Admin, Dispatch Manager, and Driver. You set the role when you add a user, and you can change it later. Drivers also have a separate per-permission layer in Driver App Config.
Why this matters
Roles gate what someone can change in the account. Driver App Config goes deeper — controlling exactly which actions a driver can take inside the mobile app, like adding stops or re-optimizing.
Before you start
- Plan requirement — Available on every plan.
- Permissions — Owner or Admin role to set user roles.
How the three roles work
- Admin — Full access to all features and settings.
- Dispatch Manager — Route management, tracking, and reporting only.
- Driver — Mobile app access for completing routes. No dashboard access.
Step-by-step: set the role when adding a user
- Go to
Users > Add User. - Select the User Role dropdown.
- Pick Admin, Dispatch Manager, or Driver.
- Fill in the remaining required fields and save.
Step-by-step: change an existing user's role
- Go to "Users".
- Click the Three-dot Icon next to the user.
- Select "Edit".
- Change the role or other details, then save.
Step-by-step: configure Driver App permissions
For drivers, you can toggle specific app capabilities on or off.
- Go to "Users".
- Click the Three-dot Icon next to a driver.
- Select "Driver App Config".
- Toggle permissions on or off across each category (see table below).
- Click "Save".
Driver App Config categories
| Category | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Route | Create, delete, duplicate, clear routes |
| Stops | Stop management options |
| Stop Logs | Access to delivery logs |
| Parcel Info | View parcel details |
| User Settings | Change personal settings |
| Optimization | Re-optimize routes |
| Navigation | Navigation options |
| POD | Proof of delivery requirements |
Driver App Config applies per driver. Each driver can have a different configuration — useful when some drivers are trusted with re-optimization and others aren't.
Common scenarios
- A trusted senior driver should be able to add stops mid-route — Open their Driver App Config, enable the relevant Stops permission.
- You want to lock down new drivers during onboarding — Disable Optimization and Route creation in their Driver App Config until they're trained.
