Swap routes between drivers
Hand an entire route to a different driver in Upper from the optimized Timeline view, or reassign a route from its summary card when plans change mid-day.
Dispatch reality changes after the plan is built. A driver calls in sick, a vehicle breaks down, or one person is simply better placed to cover an area today. Upper Route Planner lets you hand a whole route to a different driver without rebuilding the plan from scratch.
This article uses Upper's default driver/delivery labels (Swap route with Driver, Share to Drivers). Your workspace may show Technician / Service instead — the wording is configurable, but the steps are the same.
Before you start
- An optimized multi-driver plan — Swapping a route moves it to another driver in the plan, so you need at least two drivers on the route plan and the plan optimized (run Optimize Route).
- The optimized view open — Route swapping happens in the optimized Timeline view, or from the per-driver summary card.
Swap a route from the Timeline view
The Timeline view shows one row per driver. From a driver's row menu you can reassign their whole route to someone else on the plan.
Open the optimized route plan
In the left sidebar, go to Plan > Route Plan and open your multi-driver plan. Make sure it has been optimized using Optimize Route, then switch to the Timeline sub-tab.
Open the route's menu
On the driver's row, open the … menu and choose Swap route with Driver (driver-mode default; your workspace may show Swap route with Technician).
Choose the driver to reassign to
The Swap Route with Driver panel ("Reassign to other Driver") lists the other available drivers on the plan. Pick the driver who should take the route.
Share the updated route
Use Share to Drivers to push the updated route to the new driver's mobile app.
After swapping, re-optimize the route. Reassigning changes who owns the route, but the best sequence is recalculated around the new driver's start address when you optimize. ETAs are based on historical traffic data.
Reassign a route from its summary card
When the Timeline toggle is off, each driver shows as a summary card with time, distance, a status pill, stop count, and route completion. Each card has a Reassign Route link you can use to hand that route to another driver.
Open the route summary
Open your optimized plan with the Timeline toggle off so you see the per-driver summary cards.
Use Reassign Route
On the card for the route you want to move, select Reassign Route and choose the destination driver.
Share the updated route
Click Share to Drivers so the new driver receives the route on their phone.
Move individual stops instead of a whole route
If you only need to shift some stops rather than hand over the entire route, reassign stops one set at a time instead of swapping the whole route. See Drag and drop stops between routes for box-select reassignment and pre-assigning stops before you optimize.

Split a route into multiple routes
Split a route in Upper Route Planner by assigning multiple drivers during optimization, or move stops into a new route by hand for stop-by-stop control.
Use GPS coordinates instead of addresses
Add stops by latitude and longitude in Upper when a street address doesn't exist or is too imprecise. Works for manual entry and for bulk import.
