Share a route with a driver

Send a route to a driver in Upper. Push it to the driver app with Share to Drivers, or send a view-only share link by text or email as a backup.

Upper Route Planner sends routes to drivers through the Upper Route Planner driver app. Use Share to Drivers to push the route straight to the driver's phone, or send a view-only share link by text or email as a backup when the driver doesn't have the app handy.

Some workspaces use technician and service labels instead of driver and delivery. If your account shows "Share To Technician" rather than "Share to Drivers", you're in the same place — the steps are identical.

Two ways to send a route

MethodBest forWhat the driver gets
Share to Drivers (app dispatch)Everyday dispatchThe route in the Upper Route Planner driver app, with in-app navigation, stop completion, and proof of delivery
Share link (text or email)A driver who can't open the app right nowA view-only link to the route they can open in a browser

App dispatch is the standard path because the driver app handles navigation and stop tracking. The share link is a quick backup — it's view-only, so the driver works the route on their phone but doesn't complete stops back into Upper through the link.

Drivers need the Upper Route Planner driver/technician app (iOS and Android) to receive a dispatched route. The app download links appear at the bottom of the sidebar under Download app, and inside the share window.

Before you start

  • The route must be optimized (or shared with Quick Share for a single driver). After optimizing, open the route to reach the Timeline and Routes views where the share controls live.
  • For app dispatch, the driver needs an Upper Route Planner account and the driver app installed.
  • For a text or email share link, the driver needs a phone number or email on their profile.

Share to Drivers (app dispatch)

Open the optimized route

Open the route from My Route Plan, then optimize it (or use Quick Share for a single-driver route). You'll land on the route's Timeline / Routes view.

Click Share to Drivers

In the bottom bar of the route view, click Share to Drivers. The Share To Technician window opens on the Share Now tab, listing each driver with their shift, duration, distance, and stop count.

Send the route

Leave the drivers you want to dispatch checked, then click Share Now to All. Upper sends the route notification to those drivers' apps.

If you only see Quick Share (greyed out) on a multi-driver plan, optimize the route first. Quick Share is available for single-driver routes only; multi-driver plans use Optimize Route, then Share to Drivers.

Schedule the dispatch for later

Instead of sending right away, you can have Upper notify drivers a set time before the route starts.

Open the Schedule tab

In the Share To Technician window, switch from Share Now to the Schedule tab.

Choose how far ahead to notify

Under Schedule Time, pick one of: Before 15 min, Before 30 min, Before 1 hour, Before 2 hour, Before 4 hour, or Custom.

Schedule for the drivers

Click Schedule for All. Upper sends the route notification to the selected drivers at the time you chose.

Use this when a driver can't pull up the app and you just need them to see the route. The share link is view-only.

Open Share URL

In the bottom bar of the optimized route view, click Share URL. The Technician For Route Plan window opens, listing each driver with their phone number, a Share URL to copy, and a Message option.

Copy the Share URL for a driver, or use the per-driver text and email controls. To send to everyone at once, use Share Via Text or Share Via Email at the bottom of the window.

The share link is view-only. Live tracking, stop completion, and proof of delivery only flow back into Upper when the driver works the route in the Upper Route Planner driver app. Use the share link as a backup, not as the everyday way to dispatch.

Re-share after editing a route

If you change a route after sending it, share it again so the driver gets the latest version. Click Share to Drivers (or Share URL) again to push the updated route.
