Drag and drop stops between routes
Move stops between drivers in Upper using map box-select and Reassign, or pre-assign stops to a driver before you optimize a multi-driver route plan.
Optimization gets you most of the way to a balanced plan. The last bit is local knowledge — one driver knows the east side better, another has a relationship with a particular customer, someone is short on hours today. Upper Route Planner lets you fold that knowledge in by moving stops from one driver to another without rebuilding the whole plan.
This article uses Upper's default driver/delivery labels (Assign Drivers, Share to Drivers). Your workspace may show Technician / Service instead — the wording is configurable, but the steps are the same.
Before you start
- A multi-driver route plan — You need at least two drivers on the same route plan to move stops between them.
- The optimized view open — Moving stops happens in the Routes sub-tab after you optimize the plan.
Reassign stops with map box-select
In the optimized Routes view, you can select one or more stops on the map and hand them to a different driver.
Open the optimized route plan
In the left sidebar, go to Plan > Route Plan, open your multi-driver plan, and make sure it has been optimized (use Optimize Route). Switch to the Routes sub-tab.
Box-select the stops on the map
Draw a box on the map around the stop or stops you want to move. A "Selected N stops" popover appears.
Reassign to another driver
In the popover, choose Reassign to another Technician (driver-mode: Reassign to another Driver), pick the destination driver from the Select Technician dropdown, and click Reassign.
Share the updated routes
Use Share to Drivers at the bottom of the view to push the updated routes to the affected drivers' mobile app.
After moving stops, re-optimize each affected route. Reassigning changes who owns a stop, but the best sequence for the new set of stops is recalculated when you optimize. ETAs are based on historical traffic data.
Pre-assign a stop to a driver before optimizing
If you already know a stop belongs to a specific driver — a preferred-driver customer, for example — pin it to that driver before you optimize, and the optimizer will keep it with them.
Open the stop editor
In the route builder, open the stop's … menu and choose Edit Stop, then open the Basic Info tab.
Set the pre-assigned driver
In Pre Assigned Drivers, choose the driver the stop should stay with, then click Done.
Optimize
Run Optimize Route. The stop stays with the driver you chose while the rest of the plan is balanced around it.
Move a whole route instead of individual stops
If you want to hand an entire route to a different driver rather than move individual stops, swap the whole route. In the Timeline view, open a route's … menu and choose Swap route with Technician (driver-mode: Swap route with Driver), then pick the driver to reassign to.
See Swap routes between drivers for the full walkthrough.
