Customer Notifications

Notification variables and placeholders

Personalize Upper notification messages with tags like Customer Name, Delivery Time, and Tracking Link. Insert them as clickable chips and preview before saving.

Upper's notification templates include dynamic tags you can drop into a message so each customer gets details specific to their stop. Instead of "your order is on the way," the customer reads "Your Joe's Bakery order is on the way and will be delivered between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM." Same template, personalized for every stop.

Tags live in the template editor at Manage > Settings > Notifications. Each one is a clickable chip that inserts a token in [Square Brackets]; when the message sends, the token is replaced with that stop's real value.

Labels follow your workspace. A workspace set up for service businesses may show Out For Service, After Service, and Missed Service instead of the Delivery wording used here. Both refer to the same templates.

The date shown by the Delivery Date tag follows the Choose Date Format setting at the top of the Notifications page (for example, "May 31, 2026" or "05/31/2026").

How to insert a tag

  1. Go to Manage > Settings > Notifications.
  2. Make sure the channel's master toggle — Email delivery updates or Text Message (SMS) — is on. When a channel is off, its template cards are hidden.
  3. Open the editor for the template you want to change (for example, Out For Delivery).
  4. Click in the Message box where you want the value to appear. For email, you can also click into the Subject line.
  5. Click a tag chip. The token drops in at your cursor as [Tag Name]. You can select the same tag more than once.
  6. Check the What your customers will see preview pane — it renders your message with sample data and shows the resolved tracking link.
  7. Click Save.

Example message

Your [Company Name] order is on the way and will be delivered between [Earliest Time] and [Latest Time]. Track it at [Tracking Link]

When sent, this resolves to something like: "Your Joe's Bakery order is on the way and will be delivered between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Track it at https://..."

You can use the same tag more than once — for instance, opening and closing a message with the customer's name. The editor allows it.
