Add SMS credits

Add prepaid SMS balance in Upper from the Marketplace so your customer text notifications keep sending. Top up manually or set up auto-recharge.

SMS notifications in Upper run on a prepaid balance. You add funds in the Marketplace, and the cost of each text is drawn down from that balance as notifications send. Keeping a healthy balance is what keeps the SMS channel reliable, especially before a high-volume delivery day.

Why this matters

SMS notifications don't queue or retry when your balance runs out — the channel simply stops sending until you top up again. Adding funds ahead of time means your customers keep getting "out for delivery," "delivered," and "missed" updates without interruption.

Before you start

  • SMS must be enabled. Text Message (SMS) notifications are turned on under Manage > Settings > Notifications. SMS is a paid capability and is not available on the Starter plan.
  • A depot address may be required. Sending SMS notifications requires a depot address on your account. If yours isn't set, Upper will prompt you for one.
  • Permissions. You'll need an account with billing/admin access to add balance.
  • Payment method. Have your card or billing details ready.

The SMS balance covers customer text notifications, billed per message. Rates vary by destination country. See Check SMS notification rates to estimate what a top-up will cover.

Add SMS balance

SMS balance is managed through the Notifications and Alerts add-on in the Marketplace.

Open the Marketplace

From the left sidebar in Upper, go to the Marketplace.

Open Notifications and Alerts

Select the Notifications and Alerts add-on. This is where your current SMS balance is shown.

Add to your balance

Choose the option to top up your balance, enter the amount you want to add, and complete payment.

To avoid running out mid-route, set up auto-recharge on the Notifications and Alerts add-on so your balance tops up automatically when it gets low. This is the safest option for teams that send SMS every day.
