Configure vehicle types
Set a vehicle's Base Type in Upper so routes match what each vehicle can drive. Configure it on a Vehicle Profile or per driver in User Settings.
Upper uses a vehicle's Base Type to shape the routes it plans. Setting the right type means Upper routes around the limits that matter for that vehicle — clearance, weight-restricted bridges, and tolls — instead of treating every vehicle like a car. You can set the Base Type on a Vehicle Profile or per driver in User Settings.
Your workspace may label drivers as "Technicians." If you see Technician or Service wording in place of the driver and delivery labels below, that is the same feature under a different name.
Why Base Type matters
The Base Type tells the optimizer what kind of roads a vehicle can use. A vehicle set as a truck is routed around the constraints a truck has to respect; a vehicle set as a car is routed on standard roads. Choosing the type before you optimize keeps drivers off roads their vehicle can't safely use and avoids the detours that come from fixing it later.
Before you start
- Permissions — You need an Admin or Owner role to edit Vehicle Profiles.
- Available options — Upper currently shows Truck and Car as Base Types. Vans and pickups are routed as a car. The list of available types can vary by account.
Set the Base Type on a Vehicle Profile
This applies the type to the vehicle itself, so it travels with the vehicle wherever it's used.
Open Vehicle Profiles
In the left sidebar, open Fleet Operations > Vehicle Profiles.
Add or edit a profile
Click the + menu and choose Add Vehicle Profile, or click the ... menu on an existing row and choose Edit.
Choose the Base Type
On the Basic Info tab, select Base Type from the dropdown. This field is required.
Save
Click Save Changes.
Set the vehicle type per driver
You can also set a vehicle type for an individual driver in their settings. This is useful when a driver is consistently assigned the same kind of vehicle.
Open User Settings
Go to Settings > General > User Settings.
Set the Vehicle Type
Select the Vehicle Type for the driver.
Save
Save your changes.
For trucks, add the vehicle's height and width on the Vehicle Profile as well. Dimensions let Upper route around low bridges and narrow passages that the Base Type alone doesn't account for. See Set vehicle-specific restrictions.

Assign vehicles to drivers
Assign a vehicle to a driver in Upper Route Planner by linking a saved Vehicle Profile or setting the vehicle fields on the driver's record. Both paths work.
Import vehicle profiles
Import Vehicle Profiles into Upper in bulk from a file. Upload your fleet list, map the columns, and create many profiles at once instead of adding each vehicle by hand.
