Reassign a live route to a different driver
Hand an in-progress route in Upper to a different driver when someone calls in sick or a vehicle breaks down, then re-optimize and re-share the remaining stops.
Upper Route Planner lets you move an in-progress route from one driver to another when the original driver can no longer finish it — a sick day, a vehicle breakdown, or the end of a shift with stops still remaining. You reassign the route to an available driver and re-share it so the remaining stops keep moving instead of being recalled and rebuilt.
This article uses the default driver/delivery labels. If your workspace is set up for service work, you'll see Technician and Service wording instead (for example, "Assign Technicians" and "Share To Technician"). The features are the same.
Before you start
- The route is already open in Upper Route Planner from the Route Plan list.
- You have an available driver to take over — someone with enough shift time left, the right vehicle, and a workable position relative to the remaining stops.
- Both drivers have an internet connection so the change reaches their apps. If a device is offline, the update applies once it reconnects.
Reassign the route
You can hand the whole route to another driver from the route's driver row.
Open the active route
From the left sidebar, open Route Plan and select the route you need to reassign.
Open the driver row menu and choose Reassign Route
On the driver currently assigned to the route, open the row menu and choose Reassign Route. Upper lists the other available drivers you can move the route to.
Select the new driver
Pick the driver who will take over the remaining stops.
Re-optimize the remaining stops (recommended)
The new driver may be starting from a different location than the original driver. Run Optimize Route to recalculate the best sequence for the remaining stops from the new driver's starting position.
Re-share to the new driver
Click Share to Drivers to send the route to the new driver. They receive a push notification on the Upper Route Planner driver app and can start the remaining stops.
After the swap, confirm the handoff out loud: contact the original driver so they know they're off the route, and the new driver so they know to start it. Then use Live Tracking to confirm both apps updated.
When to reassign the whole route
| Scenario | What to do |
|---|---|
| Driver is sick or unavailable | Reassign the full remaining route to an available driver |
| Vehicle breakdown | Reassign to a driver with a working vehicle; coordinate any physical parcel handoff first |
| Driver hits end of shift with stops left | Reassign to a fresh driver to finish the day |
| You only need to move some stops, not all | Move the stops instead — see Re-assign routes between drivers |
