Filter and search contacts
Search your Upper contacts by text, or use the Filter panel to narrow by date range, city, state, and custom fields. Filtered results carry into routing and export.
Upper gives you two ways to narrow a long contact list: a quick Search box for text lookups, and a Filter dropdown for narrowing by date range, city, state, and your own custom fields. Whatever you isolate stays selected as you move into building a route, switching to the map, or exporting.
Why this matters
A large address book is hard to use without a way to narrow it. Once you can isolate a city, a date range, or a customer type, every downstream action — building a route, exporting, reviewing a recent import — becomes a quick, focused task instead of endless scrolling.
Before you start
- Where it lives — Go to Manage > Contacts. Both the Search box and the Filter dropdown are in the toolbar on the My Contacts tab.
- Plan note — Search, plus the Date Range, City, and State filters, are available on every plan. Filtering by a custom field requires that the custom field exists in your workspace, which depends on your plan.
- Permissions — Access to the Contacts page.
This article uses Upper's default driver/delivery labels. Your workspace may be configured to show Technician/Service terms instead — the wording is set per workspace, but the steps are the same.
Quick search
Type in the Search box in the Contacts toolbar. The list narrows as you type to the contacts that match.
If a contact you know exists doesn't appear in Search, try the Filter dropdown instead — for example, filter by City or by a custom field that the contact is tagged with.
Filter the contact list
Go to Manage > Contacts and stay on the My Contacts tab.
Open the Filter dropdown in the toolbar.
Choose a filter section and select the values you want:
- Date Range — pick a preset (Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, This month, Last month) or a custom range.
- City — select one or more cities found in your contacts.
- State — select one or more states found in your contacts.
- Custom fields — if your workspace has Contact custom fields, each one appears as its own section with a multi-select of its values.
Each section has its own Search, Select All, and Reset.
Click Apply. The contact list updates to show only the matching records.
What you can filter by
| Filter | What it narrows by |
|---|---|
| Date Range | When contacts were added — presets or a custom range |
| City | Cities present in your contacts |
| State | States present in your contacts |
| Custom fields | The values of any Contact custom field your workspace has defined |
Combining filters
You can apply filters from more than one section at the same time to narrow further — for example a Date Range of Last 30 days together with a specific City, or a custom Zone value together with a State. Click Apply to update the list.
After you filter
A filtered list is the starting point for most bulk work in Contacts:
- Build a route — select the filtered contacts, then use the + menu to Create New Route or Add To Existing Route.
- See them on a map — use the map/list toggle to view the contacts geographically.
- Export — use the Export button to download the contacts you've narrowed to.
Check the contact count shown beside the Contacts title before a bulk action such as exporting or deleting. It's a quick way to confirm you've narrowed to the set you intended.
Common scenarios
- Review a recent import — set Date Range to Today to see only what landed today.
- Pull one city for routing — filter by City, select all the results, then create a route.
- Find a single customer — type their name or address into the Search box.
