Configure user settings
Set Upper Route Planner's account defaults in User Settings — units, Optimize For, workload distribution, the default navigation map, vehicle type, and driving preferences.
User Settings holds the account-wide defaults Upper Route Planner uses every time you plan and optimize a route — your units, how routes are optimized, the navigation map drivers open, and your driving preferences. Setting these once means you don't have to re-pick them on every route.
Depending on how your workspace is set up, some labels may read Technician and Service instead of Driver and Delivery. The settings work the same either way.
Open User Settings
Open Settings
From the left sidebar, go to Manage > Settings. (You can also reach it from the top-right profile menu under Account > Settings.)
Open User Settings
In the left sub-navigation, under GENERAL, select User Settings.
What you can set
| Setting | What it does | Options |
|---|---|---|
| Service Time | Default average time spent at each stop | Time field (default 00:08) |
| Units | Distance units across the app | Miles or Kilometers |
| Optimize For | What Upper optimizes routes around | Distance or Time |
| Workload Distribution | How work is balanced across drivers | 5 modes (see below) |
| Vehicle Type | The class of vehicle used for routing | Dropdown (for example, Truck) |
| Driving Preferences Avoid | Road types to avoid | Highways / None / Highways and Tolls |
| Default Navigation Map | The map app a driver opens to navigate | Google, Apple, Waze, Map's.Me, Yandex, Sygic, In App Navigation |
| Curbside Service (Road Side) | Which side of the road to approach a stop from | Dropdown (default Any Side) |
Workload distribution modes
When a route plan has more than one driver, Workload Distribution decides how the stops are shared out:
- Auto Workload Balancing
- Equalize Workload (Equal Stops) — give each driver a similar number of stops
- Balance Workload (Equal Time) — give each driver a similar amount of working time
- Maximize Efficiency — reduce the total time to complete all stops
- Min Drivers — complete the work with as few drivers as possible
The default navigation map
Default Navigation Map sets which map app opens when a driver navigates to a stop. In App Navigation uses Upper's own built-in navigation rather than handing off to another app. This is the starting choice for your team — a driver can still change their own navigation app inside the driver app. See Set navigation preferences for drivers.
Save your changes
Click Save at the bottom of the page. Your defaults apply to new routes going forward; you can still override most of them per route in the route builder's Advanced Settings.
The same choices — Optimize For, workload distribution, units, and service time — also appear in a route's Advanced Settings, where you can fine-tune a single route without changing your account defaults.
