User roles explained

Understand Upper Route Planner user roles — Admin, Dispatch Manager, and Driver — and the account owner, so you give each person the right level of access.

Every person you add to Upper Route Planner is given one or more roles. A role controls what that person can see and do. Assigning the right roles keeps your account organized and makes sure each person has the access they need — and nothing more.

This article uses "driver" for the people who run your routes. Depending on how your workspace is set up, you may see "technician" instead — it's the same role, just a different label.

The roles

You assign roles in the User Role field when you add or edit a user. A single person can hold more than one role — for example, someone can be both a Dispatch Manager and a Driver.

Admin

Full management access to the account.

Dispatch Manager

Plans, assigns, and dispatches routes to the team.

Driver

Runs routes from the mobile app.

Admin

An Admin manages the account — including its people and settings. Give this role to the people you trust to run Upper day to day.

Dispatch Manager

A Dispatch Manager handles the routing work: building route plans, assigning drivers, optimizing, and dispatching routes to the team. This is the role for the person at the desk who keeps the day's routes moving.

Driver

A Driver runs the routes. Drivers do their work in the Upper Route Planner driver app on their phone — they receive their assigned route, navigate stop to stop, and capture proof of delivery.

Because roles stack, you can give one person exactly the access their job needs. A working supervisor who both plans and drives can hold Dispatch Manager and Driver together.

The account owner

Your account also has an owner — the account holder. A handful of account-wide settings are reserved for the owner, including Service Options (proof-of-delivery settings), Summary Reports, Vehicle Compliance Alerts, and the Manifest settings. If a teammate can't reach one of these areas, it may be owner-only.

Roles and the driver app

Whether a person can sign in to the driver app depends on whether they hold the Driver role. The driver app itself has its own, separate set of permissions — controlled by the driver app config — that determine what a driver can do inside the app (such as adding or editing stops). Roles control account access; the app config controls in-app actions. See Control driver actions.
