Optional import fields
Reference for the optional fields you can map during an Upper import — contact info, stop settings, priority, parcels, capacity, barcodes, and custom fields.
Address Line 1 is the only column Upper requires in an import. Everything else is optional — you map the columns that matter to your operation and skip the rest. This page is the menu of optional fields you can map on the Review & Import step, grouped the same way the Map to field dropdown groups them.
A pharmacy run might map time windows and barcodes; a residential parcel route might only need addresses and names. Pick what's relevant.
This article uses Upper's default driver and delivery labels (Stop Type, Pre-Assigned Drivers). A workspace can be configured to show Technician and Service instead — if yours is, you'll see those words in place of the defaults. They refer to the same fields.
Where you map these fields
Optional fields are mapped on the final step of the import wizard. On the Review & Import step, each column in your file shows as Your data column → Map to field. Open the Map to field dropdown — it's grouped and searchable — and pick the target for each column. Columns you don't map are simply skipped.
Contact fields
| Field | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Full Name | Contact or recipient name |
| Nick Name | Alternate name or shorthand |
| Business Name | Company or organization name |
| Phone | Phone number used for SMS notifications and driver contact |
| Country Phone Code | Country dialing code for the phone number |
| Email address used for email notifications |
A stop can hold up to 10 email addresses. Sending notifications to more than the first email requires the paid Multiple Email Notifications add-on from the Marketplace.
Stop fields
| Field | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Service Time | Time spent at this stop, in minutes (overrides the default) |
| From (Time Window) / To (Time Window) | Earliest and latest acceptable arrival time |
| From (Time Window) 2 / To (Time Window) 2 | An optional second time window |
| Stop Type | Delivery, Pickup, or None (default None) |
| Pin Color | Map pin color for visual coding |
| Parcel Count | Number of parcels for this stop |
| Pre-Assigned Driver | Locks the stop to a specific driver during optimization |
You can map up to two time windows per stop. Service Time values should be entered in minutes.
Notes
The Notes field (mapped under the Other group) holds an internal note or reference number for the stop.
Custom fields
Any custom fields you've defined appear in the Map to field dropdown as mappable targets — but only after you create them first.
Create the custom field in Settings → Customization before you import. If the field doesn't exist yet, the matching column has nowhere to map and is skipped. You can define up to 10 stop custom fields; only 5 are shown by default. To enable the extra 5, contact support@upperinc.com.
Capacity fields
If you've defined capacity dimensions (for example a "Bin count"), they appear in the dropdown as mappable targets so you can load capacity values during import. Capacity dimensions are user-defined in Settings → Customization → Capacity Fields.
Capacity-aware optimization — where Upper accounts for each stop's load against vehicle capacity — runs on the Optimize and Enterprise plans. On other plans, mapped capacity values are stored but aren't used to constrain the route.
Barcode fields
Barcode and QR-code fields you've defined in Settings → Customization → Barcode Fields also appear as import targets. Barcode values are normalized to uppercase letters, digits, and hyphens when imported.
Build your import around what you actually use
Don't try to map every field on day one. Start with the four or five that drive your operation — Address, Full Name, Phone, a time window, maybe Pre-Assigned Driver — and add more as the value becomes clear.
A few common starting points:
- Lean first run — Address, Full Name, Phone. Three columns: routes build cleanly and drivers see who they're delivering to.
- B2B with receiving hours — Address, Business Name, From/To (Time Window), Service Time. The optimizer works within each customer's window.
- Field service — Address, Full Name, Service Time, a custom field for the job type, and Pre-Assigned Driver so the right person gets the right jobs.

Map custom columns during import
Match your spreadsheet columns to Upper's stop fields in the import wizard. Headers auto-map, and Upper remembers your layout for the next import.
Required import fields
Upper needs only one mapped field to import stops: the address. Everything else is optional. Use a full address, separate columns, or GPS coordinates.
