Filter contacts by tags, zones, or custom fields
Use the Filter dropdown in Upper to narrow contacts by date, city, state, or any custom field your workspace uses — then select the matches for routing or export.
The Filter dropdown on the Contacts page lets you narrow your address book down to the contacts you actually need right now. Filter by when a contact was added, by city or state, or by any Contact custom field your workspace uses — such as a zone, territory, or customer type. The filtered list then feeds straight into your next action: select the matches to build a route, or export just those rows.
This article uses Upper's default driver and Delivery labels. Your workspace may be set up to show Technician and Service instead — the labels are configurable per workspace, but the steps are the same.
Why filtering helps
Filtering is the bridge between a large address book and a usable working list. Instead of scrolling and ticking checkboxes one by one, you narrow the list to the exact subset you want, then act on the whole group at once — create a route, add stops to an existing route, or export.
Before you start
- Where it lives — Open Manage > Contacts from the left sidebar and stay on the My Contacts tab. The Filter dropdown sits in the toolbar, next to Search and + Add.
- Filter by your own categories — To filter by a zone, territory, customer type, or any other category, set it up first as a Contact custom field. See Add custom fields to contacts.
Filter your contacts
Open the Contacts page
In the left sidebar, go to Manage > Contacts and make sure you're on the My Contacts tab.
Open the Filter dropdown
Click Filter in the toolbar. The dropdown lists the available filters.
Choose your filter criteria
Pick the filter you want and set its values:
- Date Range — a calendar with presets: Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, This month, and Last month.
- City — choose one or more of the cities present in your contacts.
- State — choose one or more of the states present in your contacts.
- One section per custom field — if your workspace has Contact custom fields (for example a zone or customer type), each one appears as its own filter with its values to choose from.
Each filter popover has its own Search, Select All, Reset, and Apply controls.
Apply
Click Apply to update the list. The contact list narrows to only the matching contacts.
Act on the filtered list
Once the list shows only the contacts you want, act on the whole group:
Select the contacts
Tick the row checkboxes, or use the select-all checkbox to grab every contact currently shown. As soon as one or more rows are selected, the toolbar switches to bulk actions.
Choose what to do
- Open the + menu and choose Create New Route to build a route from the selected contacts, or Add To Existing Route to append them as stops to a route you already have.
- Or use the Export button (top-right) to download just the filtered contacts as a file.
Set up a Contact custom field for the categories you route by — a zone, a territory, or a service day. Once contacts carry that field, you can filter to one value, select all, and create a route for that group in a few clicks.
What you can filter by
| Filter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Date Range | Narrows by when contacts were added, using presets (Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, This month, Last month). |
| City | Shows contacts in one or more cities found in your address book. |
| State | Shows contacts in one or more states found in your address book. |
| Custom fields | One filter section per Contact custom field your workspace has set up — for example a zone, territory, or customer type. |
